Nebraska's most distinctive ecosystem is the Sandhills — a 20,000-square-mile landscape of grass-stabilized sand dunes that is the largest sand dune formation in the Western Hemisphere and one of the most intact grassland ecosystems in North America. Nebraska's native plant communities range from tallgrass prairie in the east to shortgrass and mixed-grass prairie in the west, with riparian cottonwood-willow corridors along the Platte River.
