Most native plant guides will tell you fall is the ideal planting season. That's true — lower transplant stress, more time for roots to establish before summer heat, and better moisture retention from seasonal rains. But most gardeners plant in spring, when the energy is high and the nurseries are stocked.
Spring planting works. It just requires more attention to timing, soil conditions, and species selection. This guide breaks down how to approach it correctly — with specific keystone species organized by plant type and region.

Non-native ornamental plants are typically bred for vigor and often come in large, well-developed containers that can handle transplant stress across a wide range of conditions. Native plants, particularly bare-root and smaller container stock, are more sensitive — not because they're weaker, but because their root architecture is adapted to local soil biology and moisture patterns that take time to re-establish after planting.
Two temperature rules matter:
Soil temperature, not air temperature, governs root establishment. Roots grow when soil temperatures are above 45°F. Planting into still-cold soil (below 40°F) is effectively planting into a holding environment — the plant can't establish, is fully exposed to weather stress, and has no buffer if a late frost stresses the foliage above ground.
60–70°F soil is the ideal window for warm-season native perennials. Trees and shrubs can go in earlier (soil above 45°F), but warm-season prairie perennials like coneflowers, native sunflowers, and big bluestem grass establish best once soils have warmed fully.

Container-grown natives can go in spring without issue — the root ball is already established and needs only to acclimate to the surrounding soil. These are the easiest form to plant in spring.
Bare-root stock should ideally be planted in fall or very early spring before bud break. If you receive bare-root plants in spring and they've already started leafing out, plant immediately and water consistently — they're already past the ideal window.
Plugs (small-container transplants) are the most economical and often most successful option for perennials. Plant plugs in spring once soil has warmed; they establish quickly and typically outperform larger transplants by late summer.

If spring is the season you have, spend the priority on trees. Trees take the longest to establish, provide the greatest cumulative ecological return over time, and benefit most from going in before summer heat stress peaks.
The keystone trees to prioritize by region:
Oaks (Quercus spp.) remain the single highest-impact planting decision in eastern North America. In the Eastern Temperate Forests ecoregion (most of the eastern US), oaks support 436 caterpillar species — more than any other plant genus. Every year of growth compounds that value. Plant in spring as a container-grown sapling, keep lower branches intact (they drive root development), and mulch 3–4 inches out to the drip line.
Wild cherries (Prunus spp.) support 340 caterpillar species in eastern ecoregions and bloom early in spring — some of the first nectar available to emerging native bees. Black cherry (P. serotina) is the highest-value native cherry but grows large (40–80 ft); for smaller spaces, native chokecherry (P. virginiana) is a manageable shrub/small tree with equivalent ecological value per square foot.
Willows (Salix spp.) bloom very early in spring with catkins that are critical pollen sources for newly emerged native bees. If space is limited, shrubby pussy willow (S. discolor) is an excellent substitute for large tree willows.
Oaks, cherries, and willows remain the top keystone trees where they naturally occur, but the eastern edge of the Great Plains ecoregion transitions to grassland — here, bur oak (Q. macrocarpa) is the dominant keystone tree, extremely drought-tolerant and supporting 253 caterpillar species in this drier ecoregion.
For riparian edges of Great Plains gardens, cottonwood (Populus deltoides) and peachleaf willow (Salix amygdaloides) are the top keystone trees.
In the Mediterranean California ecoregion, the keystone tree rankings shift significantly. Native willows (Salix spp.) top the chart at 328 caterpillar species. Coast live oak (Quercus agrifolia) and canyon live oak (Q. chrysolepis) support 275 caterpillar species, with 270+ bird and wildlife species depending on them for food and habitat. White alder (Alnus rhombifolia) along streambanks supports 202 caterpillar species and is among the most important riparian keystone trees in the state.

After trees, shrubs provide the next layer of habitat — cover, nesting sites, and mid-level food resources that fill the vertical gap between tree canopy and ground.
Serviceberry (Amelanchier spp.) is one of the best spring planting investments for any eastern garden. It blooms in early spring (among the very first shrubs), producing white flowers that feed native bees before most other plants are open. Its early-ripening berries in May and June are a critical food source for migrating thrushes, waxwings, and orioles arriving exhausted from long migratory flights. It supports 92 caterpillar species.
Native viburnums (Viburnum spp.) — particularly arrowwood viburnum (V. dentatum) and blackhaw (V. prunifolium) — bloom in spring, provide dense cover, and produce fat-rich berries consumed by more than 35 bird species during fall migration. Plant multiple native viburnums together for cross-pollination and maximum berry set.
Spicebush (Lindera benzoin) is the essential native shrub for woodland and part-shade gardens in the East. It's the exclusive larval host plant for spicebush swallowtail butterflies and supports numerous caterpillar species. Its small yellow flowers appear before the leaves in early spring, providing early-season pollen; its bright red fall berries are high in fat and consumed heavily by migrating thrushes.
Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis) for wet or seasonally moist areas — tolerates standing water, blooms in the late-summer nectar gap, and produces seeds consumed by waterfowl. One of the best native shrubs for low-lying or drainage-problem sites.

Spring is the best time to establish native perennials — they're actively growing, root establishment happens quickly, and the first-year establishment window is ideal for long-lived plants that will compound ecological value for decades.
Plant in plugs or small containers for best results. Large container perennials from big-box stores are often root-bound and stressed; smaller plugs from specialty native plant nurseries establish faster.
Goldenrod (Solidago spp.) is the most important fall-blooming plant you can install in spring. It takes a full season to establish before blooming, so spring planting puts it in the ground to develop roots through summer before it flowers in fall — when 104 caterpillar species and 42 pollen specialist bees depend on it. Don't plant goldenrod and expect fall blooms the first year; plant it in spring and let it establish.
Coneflowers (Echinacea spp.) are an accessible entry point for many gardeners. They support specialist bees including Andrena rudbeckiae, bloom mid-summer into fall, and produce seed heads that persist through winter as a food source for goldfinches. E. purpurea is the most widely adapted; E. pallida and E. angustifolia are better choices for dry, lean soils.
Wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa) is among the most bee-visited plants in eastern North American studies. Bumblebees, sweat bees, and specialist mining bees all depend on it. It establishes well from spring plugs and spreads moderately by rhizome, filling in areas over time.
Milkweed (Asclepias spp.) — the keystone plant for monarch butterflies — should go in the ground as early as possible in spring. Monarchs begin arriving from Mexico in spring, and established milkweed is a critical resource for the first generation of the season. Common milkweed (A. syriaca) for eastern gardens; butterfly weed (A. tuberosa) for dry sites; swamp milkweed (A. incarnata) for wet areas.
Native grasses for prairie and open areas: Big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii) and little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) are structural grasses that provide overwintering habitat for native bees and insects, nesting material for birds, and form the matrix of a healthy native plant community. Plant plugs in spring; they establish slowly in year one but are vigorous by year two.

Research from the University of Delaware found that Carolina chickadees cannot maintain breeding populations in areas where less than 70% of the landscape plants are native species. Below that threshold, there simply aren't enough caterpillars to feed nestlings through the breeding season — a single pair requires 6,000–9,000 caterpillars per clutch.
This threshold provides a planning tool for spring: as you add plants this season, track whether your additions are moving you toward or away from 70% native cover. Replacing a single non-native ornamental shrub with a keystone native moves you further than adding a new native in a previously bare area.
A 2026 study published in Urban Ecosystems found that native yards supported 1.5x higher insect and bird richness than conventional yards overall — rising to 1.8x higher in fall, when late-season keystone plants like goldenrod and asters are in peak bloom. The data shows measurable benefit begins well below 100% native — but the effects compound with each additional keystone plant.

Spring is when native plant nurseries are best stocked, but quality varies significantly. A few criteria matter:
Source local ecotypes. Plants grown from seed collected within 100–200 miles of your garden are genetically better adapted to your local climate, soils, and wildlife. Ask nurseries where their seed stock comes from.
Avoid invasive cultivars labeled as "native." Many commonly sold plants are native species modified through breeding — 'Endless Summer' hydrangeas, neon-colored coneflowers, double-flowered black-eyed susans. These are native in name but altered in ways that reduce or eliminate their value to specialist insects. When possible, source straight species or cultivars confirmed to maintain wildlife value.
