The white oak is the keystone tree of the eastern United States. Plant one in a suburban yard in Virginia or Pennsylvania and you're potentially supporting over 400 caterpillar species, dozens of specialist bees, and hundreds of bird species that depend on those insects to raise their young.
But if you're gardening in California, a white oak isn't your keystone tree. In the Mediterranean California ecoregion, the keystone tree rankings look substantially different — and the species at the top of that list are ones most Californians have never considered planting.

Two things stand out immediately. First, native willows (Salix) top the list — supporting 328 caterpillar species in California's ecoregion, more than any other tree genus. Second, Ceanothus (California lilac) appears at 120 caterpillar species — a genus almost entirely absent from eastern keystone lists. These are California-specific keystones that reflect the distinct evolutionary relationships that developed in this unique climate.

The California sycamore is one of the region's most distinctive native trees — and one of the most underappreciated as a keystone plant.
Found only in California and Baja California (generally below 4,000 feet elevation), Platanus racemosa is a riparian tree of streamsides, canyons, and valley bottoms. It doesn't appear in the top 30 caterpillar-support genera for the Mediterranean California ecoregion — but it plays an ecological role that the species count alone doesn't capture.
Structural habitat at scale. A mature California sycamore reaches 75–100 feet, with one or multiple massive trunks and an open, irregular crown. The City of Glendale's urban forestry data documents that oak, sycamore, and bay trees together provide habitat for 81 species of resident and migratory birds in California's urban and suburban landscapes.
Riparian habitat anchor. California sycamore is a keystone of the riparian woodland ecosystem — the narrow, water-adjacent corridors that support disproportionate biodiversity in California's dry landscape. These corridors function as migration pathways, breeding habitat for warblers and flycatchers, and the only year-round habitat in regions with prolonged summer drought. Without sycamores in the riparian structure, the habitat structure collapses.
Fast canopy establishment. Unlike oaks, which grow slowly, California sycamore is a fast-growing tree — sometimes adding 15–20 feet in five years. For gardeners and restoration projects that need large-canopy wildlife habitat quickly, sycamore provides a canopy overhead while slower-growing oaks establish below.
Nesting and cavity habitat. As sycamores age, they develop hollow trunks and large branches — critical nesting sites for cavity-nesting birds including woodpeckers, western screech-owls, and wood ducks. Old sycamores in riparian corridors function as the housing infrastructure of the surrounding bird community.
Despite growing to 100 feet, California sycamore can be managed as a multi-trunk specimen in larger suburban yards (minimum half-acre). Its shallow roots require moist, well-drained soil — it doesn't establish well in heavy clay or in sites far from seasonal water.
It's deciduous (an advantage for summer-drought landscapes — it drops leaves in fall, then regrows in spring), and the large, maple-like leaves create significant leaf litter that serves as overwintering habitat for ground-nesting insects.
Plant in fall for best establishment in California's climate — the rainy season from November through March does the establishment work so the tree can handle summer drought. Once established (typically 2–3 years), California sycamore is drought-tolerant and largely self-sustaining.

This ranking surprises many California gardeners, who tend to think of willows as weedy or messy. The signature oak of California's coast ranges, coast live oak is evergreen — unlike eastern oaks, it holds its leaves year-round, providing consistent structure and year-round insect habitat. The NWF data places oaks second in California's keystone rankings at 275 caterpillar species.
Over 270 species of birds and wildlife depend on coast live oaks for food and habitat. Acorns are a primary food source for acorn woodpeckers (which store thousands in excavated "granary trees"), band-tailed pigeons, mule deer, and black bears. The tree's complex bark and dense canopy support a community of insects that feeds resident and migratory birds year-round.
Key species:
Valley oak deserves special mention: it's the largest native oak west of the Rockies, can live 600+ years, and produces the acorns most consumed by California's wildlife community. Where space allows, valley oak is the single highest-return long-term investment available to a California gardener or restoration project.

Ceanothus appears nowhere on eastern keystone plant lists — it's a primarily California and western genus that evolved specific relationships with California's native insect community. With 120 caterpillar species supported in Mediterranean California, it ranks alongside maple as a keystone tree/shrub that has no equivalent in eastern gardening.
Beyond caterpillars, Ceanothus is a critical nitrogen-fixer — its root nodules host bacteria that convert atmospheric nitrogen into a form plants can use, improving soil fertility for surrounding plants. It also produces abundant blue, white, or purple flowers in spring that are among the most important nectar sources for native bees in California's Mediterranean climate.

The key limitation of Ceanothus: most species are fire-adapted shrubs or small trees with relatively short life spans (15–25 years) compared to oaks. Plan for replacement planting as older specimens decline.

White alder is the riparian counterpart to willow — a nitrogen-fixing native tree that supports 202 caterpillar species in the Mediterranean California ecoregion and anchors streamside habitat across much of the state.
It grows fast (comparable to sycamore), tolerates seasonal flooding, and produces catkins that are critical early spring pollen sources. Its root nodules fix nitrogen, enriching the streamside soils that benefit surrounding riparian plants.
For riparian restoration projects or streamside gardens, the natural plant community is: willow + alder + sycamore + native cottonwood, with understory shrubs including native dogwood, elderberry, and wild rose.
